Coloxyl is a stool softener which assists in the relief of constipation.
Adults take 2 tablets once a day after the evening meal.
This medication should not be used in patients with abdominal cramps, colic, nausea, vomiting or other symptoms of appendicitis; undiagnosed rectal bleeding, intestinal obstruction; abdominal pain of unknown cause or previous allergy to stool softener laxatives. Due to the sodium content of docusate sodium, caution should be exercised when giving this preparation to patients with congestive heart failure or hypertension. Prolonged use of any laxative is undesirable and may lead to dependence. Patients should be advised to drink plenty of water and increase the fibre in the diet and to consult their doctor if constipation persists. Care should be taken in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
